Walking Taco Casserole
1 1/2 lb ground beef
1 pkg taco seasoning mix
Fritos
Shredded Cheddar cheese
Brown 1 1/2 lbs ground beef. Mix in taco seasoning and cook according to directions on package.
Layer in a casserole dish in the following order: Fritos chips, meat mixture, shredded cheese. Repeat layers once again.
Bake at 350° for about 15-20 min or until cheese is bubbly.
After removing from oven I added more cheese on the top.
I really liked this and so did Marley until she got up from the table and Zeus ate it. The only downside is when you reheat it the next day the chips are all soggy. Maybe next time I'll do a half size so that way I don't have soggy chips.
Actually the chips are already soggy right after you bake it. I use salt-free tortilla chips, as Fritos are way too salty, especially when combined with taco seasoning and cheese.
ReplyDeleteGood idea. Thanks for the tip! I don't know that I've ever seen salt free ones, but I will look for next time. My top layer of chips were crunchy after I baked it, but when I reheated it they turned soggy.
DeleteYes, the chips ARE already soggy after you bake them. I also agree that Fritos are WAY too salty, and I use salt-free tortilla chips, as well.
DeleteTry it with Nacho Cheese Doritos....its so good that way.
DeleteThis sounds more like a naked taco lol There's no toppings on it. I always thought a walking taco was made in a snack size Dorito (what ever your favorite chip is) chip bag. You use the chips to scoop the goodies.
DeleteThis is in the oven right now. Can't wait to try it!!
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoyed it! It's a very popular recipe.
DeleteA walking taco in SD uses Dorito chips... So when I make this, I will try it with Dorito's. Did you use toppings at all?
ReplyDeleteI didn't, just because I don't like lettuce, sour cream, or tomatoes. Let me know how it is with dorito's!
DeleteMaking this for dinner tonight! Sounds yummy!
ReplyDeleteHope you like it!

ReplyDeleteI never heard of a walking taco, BUT I will be making this for our next football watching party. Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteI make walking tacos adding the meat mixture to a small (single-serving) crunched up bag of doritos or fritos. Slit the bag on the side, add a scoop of the meat mixture, some sour cream, salsa, tomatoes, lettuce, or anything else you might add to a taco. Grab a fork, and you can truly 'walk around' with your taco. Not sure why this recipe is called a walking taco.
ReplyDeleteI didn't create it, but I imagine it's called walking taco because it's all the same ingredients as a "walking taco" but in a casserole dish instead of a bag. They do taste better in a fritos bag at a local festival though.
DeleteI never heard of this entil I came to visit someone and went to a football game and this is what they served they were a GREAT IDEA and tasted really good.
DeleteA walking taco is in a small frito bag.....they are so yummy !
DeleteThis sounds super yummy and seems to be a "kid friendly" dish. I am making it to take to a pot luck Christmas party! (I will be putting lettuce, tomatos and sour cream on the side for people to add as they please)- Catrina
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing! I think im going to throw in a layer of refried beans when I make it this week. Looks yummy!
ReplyDeleteJust made this for dinner, but i substituted corn chips for doritos, my husband loved it. Its great served with salsa and lettuce. Thank you =]
ReplyDeleteI tried it with Doritos and it turned out even better! when it came out I also added lettuce!!!!!
ReplyDeleteGoing to make this for dinner with Doritos! Thinking about adding a can of corn and maybe a can of diced tomatos (only bc i dont have fresh)!
ReplyDeleteThis was delicious. My family loved it. We added lettuce, tomatoes and sour cream as side items for them to choose to top it off. It was awesome.
ReplyDeleteGlad everyone liked it. It's a popular dish!
DeleteLooks fantastic, would be perfect with some jalapenos!
ReplyDeleteI think I will try it with crunched up tortilla chips as the bottom layer follow the rest and use as a dip with torillia chips!!
ReplyDeleteJust mix the meat and cheese, then use that to top the chips in a bowl.
ReplyDeleteVery good! I added vegetarian re-fried beans and corn to the layers. Sided with lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, and taco sauce! Also used multi-grain Tostitos instead of the corn chips....delicious!! Thanks for the share : )
ReplyDeleteI also made this with refried beans... very good.... and lettuce, tomatoes and salsa on top..... awesome! thanks for sharing...
ReplyDeleteSpread refried beans on a burrito shell, then this casserole, followed by sour cream and banana peppers. Walking Taco Burrito!!!!
ReplyDeleteI live in Santa Fe, New Mexico and we call these Frito Pies. We make them with fresh pinto beans made in a crock pot.
ReplyDeleteFor single servings, you put fritos on the bottom of your bowl, then ladle the beans and a little bit of the bean juice on top of the fritos, top with homemade red chili that is made with ground beef (NO CUMIN), and top with shredded cheese, diced onions and tomatoes, shredded lettuce, and sour cream.
They are always sold at local High School football and basketball games in single serving Frito Lay bags and are super delish and never more than $4/each.
One of the best Spanish, not mexican, meals ever :)
Yes! Yum, we New Mexicans really know how to eat! :)
DeleteI make a taco casserole that calls for quarter a bag of crushed doritos on the bottom of a 9x13 pan 3lbs of ground beef cooked and then add 3 pkgs of taco seasoning and cook as directed then add 2 cans of cream of chicken soup to meat and 16 ounces of your choice of cheese heat all on sove and pour over doritos and then add rest of bag on on top and bake coverd 20 min at 350 deg. then uncover 10 min. You can add toppings on top as you serve if you like....Yummy!!!!
ReplyDeleteOh that sounds good. I'll have to add it to my list of recipes to try.
DeleteI made this for my family today and it was a super hit, my picky eater ate three servings, I did top it with lettuce, onion, sour cream and taco sauce but that is the way we like it, will definitely be making it again.
ReplyDeleteSending my hubby to the store right now to get the ingredients. So..do you put this in the middle of taco shells?
ReplyDeleteYou could. we just ate it with a fork. let me know if you try it on shells.
DeleteMade it for dinner tonight and they all loved it! Mine was NOT SOGGY at all! I just drained the hamburger before putting it on and even after sitting there for a bit, it never got soggy! Kids ate it plain, hubby added taco sauce, and I added lettuce and sour cream and taco sauce. Yum! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteGlad your family enjoyed it. Mine wasn't soggy after baking, but my leftovers were. Thanks for trying it out!
DeleteI'm actually gonna try that tonight. Except I'm goin to be using nacho cheese doritos.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds good. hope you enjoy it.
DeleteDelicious. I made it just as your recipe states. It wasn't AT ALL soggy. In fact, nice and crunchy! I used good ground beef so there was very little grease. Not too salty either. Loved it!!!
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked it!
DeleteI tried this the other night and I went by the directions and it was very very very dry. My kids or I could not eat it....any other suggestions on maybe adding something to it???
ReplyDeleteOthers have added sour cream or taco sauce. maybe add a little more water to your taco meat so it's more watery and not dry.
DeleteMy mouth is watering...except for in NEW Mexico, we call this Frito Pie. :) and we add a ton of chile. And beans!
ReplyDeleteWe use to make these..but in snack size frito bags...just open bag put a scoop of meat then cheese lettuce etc what u wanted on it.. Hints the name walking frito pie..you could walk around with it at fair picnic park etc.. No baking.. Chips were crunchy.
ReplyDelete*Hence ... Not "Hints".
DeleteWalking tacos in with come in little frito bags..super cool on the go! And no baking! Just put it all in and fold the top...cheese will melt.
ReplyDeleteMy Husband an I just brown lean hamburger meat, add seasoning. Then on a plate or in a bowl we put fritos, meat, lettuce, sourcream, shreded cheese, and tomoatoes on it and eat it like a taco salad! The kids love it too!
ReplyDeleteI do this with a layer of Vigo brand Black Beans & Rice (Cuban seasonings), sans the chips AND the trip to the oven! Then I eat it as a dip with blue corn tortilla chips...easily re-heatable and versatile if you feel like having some sour cream, guacamole, and/or salsa as a top layer. Easy to add lettuce, cabbage or tomatoes too. Trust me on this one...you'll be making the full 9" x 13" batches every time! Just as good with ground turkey for those watching their calories or fat intake. :D Going Anon for lack of choices. (FB is my preferred method of communication & where I saw your recipe).
ReplyDeleteHas anyone used chicken??
ReplyDeleteOh that sounds good! Let me know if you make it with chicken and how it turns out.
DeleteIt came out great it was just missing something but couldn't put my finger on it!!
ReplyDeleteI love all the different ideas people posted...I can't wait to try some of these! They all sound great!
ReplyDeleteSince I have Frito's I will use those to make this tonight but I can see my family preferring it with Doritos as my husband and kiddos are HUGE Doritos fans. I am thinking of adding some of my wonderful homemade re-fried beans to add some bulk and stretch out the ground beef so I can make it with one pound instead of 1.5 pounds :) Thanks for the inspiration and the recipe and I can't wait to whip it all together tonight.
ReplyDeleteDelicious if you use Nacho Cheese Doritos and a "Nacho Cheese" or "Three Cheese" shredded cheese mixture (can be bought at pretty much any grocery store) :)
ReplyDeleteMine was dry and the chips were not soggy..any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteI made this last week and I can't get enough...... I do make it with tortilla chips they got a little soggy not too bad.... but when I made it today I ground up the chips smaller and much cruncher..... thanks for this great food LOVE it
ReplyDeleteDid you use the entire bag of Fritos?
ReplyDeleteYes I did use a whole bag. Thanks for stopping by! Hope you like it!
